About our Name and Labels

The Black Hills are a wonder of unique geology and hydrology. They shoot up over 3,000 feet above the surrounding plains and have a skyline that gives clues about their formation. The Black Hills began forming over 70 million years ago by an uplift with a crystalline core composed of the oldest rocks in the hills. This core formed the granite peaks near Mount Rushmore, the Cathedral Spires, and is dominated by the 7,242-foot high Black Elk Peak. Encircling the core of the Black Hills are progressively younger rock layers fanning downward and outward until they reach the plains. This distinctive skyline immediately reminds us of home and inspired our winery's name and labels. Our name is more than just a reference to the Blacks Hills, we hope your experiences with us will be uplifting.

About our General Manager and Winemaker: Adam Martinez

My journey in the wine business began 14 years ago, and my passion for the art of winemaking has been growing ever since. In 2017, I stepped into the role of winemaker, embarking on an incredible journey of discovery, growth, and shared experiences. Along the way, I had the privilege of studying a broad range of subjects from law to chemistry, culminating in an enology certificate from Washington State University. This blend of formal education and hands-on experience has profoundly shaped my winemaking philosophy. I grew up as a "gypsy," never staying in one place longer than two years, until I found my home in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota. When I met my wife in 2011 and settled here, I knew I had found something special in her and this stunning part of the world. It’s here, surrounded by breathtaking landscapes and a warm community, that we’re building Uplifted Winery—a place for everyone, with a wine for everyone. To me, wine is more than just a beverage; it’s a way to nourish community. I believe the best wine in the world is the one that resonates most with each individual. Everyone has their favorite, and that’s what makes wine so personal and exciting. My wife and I are thrilled to be starting Uplifted Winery, where tradition meets innovation and everyone can find something that speaks to them.

About Our Proprietor and Administrator: Emily Martinez (Squillace)

I’ve called Rapid City home since I was four, and the Black Hills have shaped who I am. As one of six kids, I spent countless days hiking, exploring the rocks, and learning from my parents—both hydrologists and geologists—who passed on their deep love for this land. After graduating from the local engineering college, I stayed rooted here, met my husband, and together we discovered a shared passion for wine and community. That passion became Uplifted Winery.

Our wines honor the stories of this landscape, from geology-inspired labels to a logo shaped by the Hills. We’re proud to share a taste of this place with you.

About Our Wine Club Manager: Kara Sweet

Nearly fifteen years ago, I made it my mission to share this passion with those in the Black Hills. I love to share wine with others and have gotten to do this in so many different ways: print projects, educational classes, wine clubs, and fun events. My goal has always been to take the fear and pretension out of wine by expanding local palates to quality wines. Providing real hospitality and amazing service to connect with guests is what Uplifted Winery is all about. I am honored and excited to help Adam and Emily get their labor of love off the ground! I can't wait to share Uplifted Wines with you.

About Our Marketing Manager and Tasting Associate: Lainy Culberson

I was born and raised in Rapid City, spending much of my childhood roaming the Black Hills. Some of my earliest adventures were exploring the Custer rock formations on my grandparents’ property — experiences that sparked a love for nature and discovery that has stayed with me ever since.

Art has been a lifelong passion, leading me to pursue a degree in Digital Arts and Design. Through Uplifted Winery, I’ve been able to blend creativity into my everyday life, and along the way, I’ve developed a growing love for the art of wine as well.

At Uplifted Winery, we celebrate both new and familiar passions — and we’re so excited to share this journey with you
